Stairway to Heaven: SDS Highlights Sophisticated Lux
For a sophisticated new build in Atherton, we designed a dramatic floating stairwell as the focal point of a 12,000 square foot home. To fabricate the staircase, we turned to master artisan, Nathie Katzoff, of NK Woodworking & Design in Seattle, WA. Nathie received his woodworking training from The Landing School in Arundel, Maine. He applies the same meticulous craftsmanship he learned from boat building to creating sculptural staircases.
NK Woodworking & Design built a to-scale model out of Legos so that our design team, Young and Borlik Architects, and Mark Kelley Construction could visualize the staircase. The finished product is a masterpiece with Smoked Oak Finish stairs and risers, translucent glass panels, and bronze handrails. To complete the luxurious surfaces, we selected Raw Bianco Carrara for the wall and a contemporary chandelier with floating pendants of blown borosilicate glass.
